Why Relying on Spec Sheets Alone for GE Transformers Is a Dangerous Shortcut

2. Field service and support availability—invisible on paper

The spec sheet doesn't tell you which parts are still in production, or how quickly you can get a replacement bushing or a Multilin 845 relay board. (That's the kind of detail that can shut down a critical line for days.)

  • Get a written commitment on lead time for replacement parts. The spec sheet won't tell you if a bushing is backordered for six months.

Some people will say: "You're just loyal to GE." Fair question. I've looked at ABB and Siemens units too. And sometimes they're a good fit. My point isn't brand loyalty—it's about due diligence beyond the spec sheet.

That said, I've seen situations where a supposedly equivalent competitor unit had a significantly different bushing design, which would have required re-engineering our existing mounting. The spec sheet said "compatible." In practice, it wasn't. (ugh)

The core takeaway isn't complicated

An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. I'd rather spend 10 minutes checking the manufacturing history and service availability than deal with a mismatch later. That time investment has saved us more than the occasional price discount ever could.
