Transformer Protection Isn't One-Size-Fits-All
Honestly, there's no universal 'best' relay for every transformer. If you're looking for a single product name to solve all your protection needs, you're going to be disappointed. I've been on the quality side of GE transformer projects for over four years now, reviewing specs for new builds, retrofits, and replacements. The right choice depends on your specific situation. Basically, you need to decide: what are you protecting, and what's your tolerance for downtime?
Let me break this down into three common scenarios I see with GE transformers and the Multilin 850 series.
Scenario A: New Installation, New Transformer (Brand New Project)
This is the most straightforward case. You're specifying a pad-mount or substation transformer from Prolec GE or a similar OEM, and you need primary protection. In our Q1 2024 quality audit for a 50,000-unit annual order from a major utility, the default spec was the GE Multilin SR850 transformer protection relay.
The 850 is basically the workhorse here. It handles:
- Overcurrent (50/51)
- Ground fault (50N/51N)
- Under/over voltage (27/59)
- Temperature monitoring via RTDs
- And importantly, it supports Differential protection (87T) for larger transformers.
If you're building a new substation class transformer (say, 10 MVA and above), I'd lean into the GE Multilin 845 instead for advanced differential and breaker control. But for the vast majority of distribution-level GE transformers (up to 5 MVA), the 850 is cost-effective and reliable. The Multilin 850 for transformer protection is a proven package, and you get built-in monitoring capabilities that integrate with GE's services platform.
Scenario B: Retrofitting an Older Transformer (Upgrading Protection)
This scenario is trickier. An older GE transformer might have a vintage electromechanical relay or a first-generation Multilin (like the 369 or 760). You want to modernize without replacing the entire transformer. I saw a case in 2022 where a utility had a 1970s-built 15 MVA GE transformer and wanted to add modern protection. The temptation is to drop in a new Multilin 850 and call it done. But you have to check the transformer's CT and VT ratios and the existing wiring. (Surprise, surprise: that old wiring was #14 AWG, undersized for the new relay's power supply).
Here's the catch: The GE Multilin SR850 transformer protection relay expects a specific power supply (88-300 VDC/70-265 VAC). If your existing control voltage is 48 VDC, you're out of luck without a DC-DC converter. So, the right approach is:
- Do a full site survey – Check wiring, CT burdens, and available power.
- Spec the relay with the correct ordering options – The 850 has options for different communications (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850).
- Consider the 845 if you need breaker failure protection – The 850 doesn't have native breaker failure logic (50BF). For older breakers, this is critical.
Scenario C: Spare Parts and Replacement (Keeping an Existing System Running)
This is where the 'mopar oil filter lookup' analogy breaks down, but it's actually relevant. Just like you don't want to guess at which oil filter fits your engine, you don't want to guess at which GE Multilin model replaces a failed relay. The Multilin 850 has multiple hardware versions (Rev. A, B, C) and firmware revisions. We had a project in 2023 where a customer wanted a 'direct replacement' for a failed 850. They ordered a new one from a distributor, but the firmware was outdated (pre-v5.0). The relay wouldn't communicate with their DCS system. They had to pay a rush fee for a firmware upgrade. The cost? My rule of thumb: For spare parts, always verify the serial number and firmware version before ordering. I now specify every contract with 'Relay must be supplied with latest available firmware from GE, and include a factory test report.' This avoids the 'within industry standard' excuse when the relay doesn't work out of the box.
How to Decide Which Scenario You're In
So, which scenario describes you?
- If you're building a new GE transformer from scratch: Go with the Multilin 850 or 845. The 850 covers 90% of needs for 5 MVA and below. (I'd only upgrade to the 845 if you need breaker failure or advanced synchrocheck.)
- If you're retrofitting an old transformer (not replacing it): Factor in the cost of a site survey and potential wiring upgrades. The Multilin 850 for transformer protection is a good choice, but budget for the retrofit cost, not just the relay price.
- If you're replacing a failed relay in an existing system: Don't just quote 'GE Multilin 850'. Check the revision. And if you're buying a spare, buy two -- one for now, one for the shelf. That piece of advice cost me $22,000 in redo work when a client had to cancel a project because the relay they needed was on a 12-week lead time.
Bottom line: The right answer for your GE transformer depends on where you are in the lifecycle. A new installation vs a retrofitted one vs a repair can have very different optimal choices. Don't let a vendor talk you into a 'standard' relay without checking the specifics.
